Demand in the U.S. for organic rice exceeds domestic supply encouraging significant competition from imports. While there is substantial potential for growth and expansion of the U.S. organic rice sector, the industry needs insight about the economic opportunities in the organic rice market to take advantage of this potential.
Gathering knowledge about consumer attitudes and preferences and assessing the economic impacts of production practices from domestic organic rice farms and mills will help this project to achieve its goal of developing new strategies and facilitate the expansion of organic rice production in the U.S.
The project will also develop a multi-state outreach program and interactive tools to disseminate the project’s findings through research and extension efforts to support farmers in their decision to transition to organic production and educate policymakers in designing supportive regulations.
